What are the most important things I need to know?

Remember THIA’s* Four Golden Rules when purchasing travel health insurance:
Know your trip – Your trip details and medical history will determine your eligibility for travel health insurance. Are you going to be mountain climbing, skiing, drinking heavily or taking part in other activities? Let your insurance advisor. know about any high-risk activities that you may have planned for your trips so that you can get the right plan for your needs.
Know your health – It’s important to know your medical history and declare any pre-existing medical conditions. Provide all information to your insurance advisor to get an appropriate policy for you.
Know your policy – Make sure your policy covers your needs. Will you need coverage for you or your whole family. Will you be covered for one trip or many in the year? Will you be able to extend your policy if you have to stay longer than expected? Will you be covered for COVID-19? Understanding your policy is key to peace of mind.

What is a pre-existing condition, and can I get coverage with one?

A pre-existing medical condition is usually a major reason for declined medical claims. Generally, pre-existing conditions are defined as any sickness, injury or medical condition that you’ve had symptoms, received treatment, consulted a medical professional or required change of medication type or dosage. Travel insurance policies, including those providing protection for unexpected medical costs, trip cancellation or trip interruption may cover claims relating to pre-existing conditions that are stable and controlled. Insurance companies may define this term differently, but generally they will not cover conditions or symptoms that have happened within a certain time frame prior to your departure. This time frame varies based on your chosen insurance plan and it could be as little as 7 days or as long as one year. If you have any doubts about changes you may have experienced during these time frames, or don’t understand terminology in the policy or your medical application for insurance, check with your doctor and your insurance advisor.
I have insurance through my work or credit card, Is this enough?

Some credit cards and companies offer travel insurance, but there may be limitations and restrictions to your coverage. Pre-existing medical conditions and certain activities may be excluded. The coverage usually apply for a limited number of days or there could be a maximum age restriction. It’s important you know the details of your policy and be aware of any specific restrictions your credit card company or work benefits may have. Read through the details of your policy and ask your insurance provider questions specific to your health and travel activities.
What is not covered by Travel Health Insurance?

All travel policies have their own requirements for eligibility with limitations and maximum amounts for certain types of claims and benefits. Generally, most policies do not cover pre-existing conditions. It’s important that you understand your medical status and report it correctly to your insurance advisor as that information is used to determine your coverage and your premium. Claims generated by activities such as skydiving, bungee jumping, alcohol or drug abuse may also not be payable. Other common exclusion is accidents or illness caused by abuse of drugs or alcohol. The travel insurance covers you during the medical emergency, which may include a post-treatment follow-up visit. But ongoing and continuing medical care is usually not covered. Also excluded are elective or cosmetic surgery, non-emergency care that could be delayed until you return to your home.

It’s important you read and understand the exclusions and limitations, as travel insurance covers unexpected emergencies only. It is not a substitute for your provincial health insurance.
Can I go to any doctor/hospital, or am I limited to specific medical practitioners?

There are no restrictions where you seek medical service, as long as the amount charged by the providers is Usual, Customary and Reasonable for a particular service, treatment, or supply. You must notify your insurance company as soon as possible of any emergency medical treatment or hospitalization. Failure to do so will result in decreasing your insurance benefit. The travel assistance centers are available 24/7 to help you obtain medical treatment, verify coverage, coordinate medical care and transportation, and provide foreign language support.
Will my travel insurance policy pay my medical costs up front?

When a travel assistance center is contacted because an insured is being treated for a medical emergency, a confirmation that the patient purchased insurance coverage is sent to the medical provider. Your insurance company will pay the eligible medical bills directly to the medical provider or hospital for you whenever possible. There may be some foreign medical providers who will require the patient to make a deposit or pay them directly. Insurance companies usually promptly reimburse these expenses to the insured once they ensure that the terms and conditions of the policy have been met and all the claim documentation is received. Canadian travel assistance centers have existing relationships with medical providers in many vacation destinations, as well as contacts all over the world, to ensure emergency situations are handled as smoothly as possible.
Can I buy travel insurance after I left Canada?

There are a limited number of travel insurance plans that allow to apply for coverage after your departure. Please, contact us for a quote. It is recommended you always purchase your insurance prior to your departure from your province to avoid limiting your choices.
Do I need travel insurance if I'm travelling within Canada?

Your health care plan may only cover the same amount that can be charged in your home province, which means that you would have to pay the difference. Costs that may not be covered include ground and air ambulance, medical devices such as crutches and splints, emergency dental care, repatriation to your home province, and flying a family member if you require assistance. Canadians travelling outside of their province of residence but within the country can also take advantage of plans that include benefits for Trip Cancellation, Interruption and Baggage for added reassurance in case an unexpected event derails your plans. Many of the Canadian insurance companies have arrangements with all provinces and territories to pay claims first, and then submit your receipts and original bills to your provincial health insurance plan for reimbursement. This takes significant paperwork out of your hands during the claims process. Remember, government health care plans aren’t “mobile” like your smartphone, so consider travel insurance every time you’re travelling outside your province of residence, even when staying within Canada’s borders.
When are sports-related injuries covered?
Is there any travel insurance that covers pregnancy?

While travelling early on in a healthy pregnancy may be acceptable, pregnancy may be considered a pre-existing medical condition subject to exclusions in some travel insurance policies. If you’ve had no complications during your pregnancy and your doctor confirms your pregnancy is stable, some travel insurance providers will insure you up to nine weeks before or after your due date. However, the following coverage exclusions apply:
Your travel medical insurance will not cover:
• Routine prenatal or postnatal care
• Pregnancy, childbirth and complications of pregnancy and childbirth in the 9 weeks before or after your expected due date
• A child born during your trip
